Calm After the Storm

We braced for Hurricane Irene's approach for an entire week.

One week of the news telling us it was going to be the worst storm in decades.

One week of preparations, running to the store, stocking up on essentials, filling the cars with gas.

One week of predictions, everyone having an opinion of when, where, how severe the storm's wrath would be.

One week of prayers for protection.

The waiting part was the worst.

Saturday we sat and waited. Did nothing but clean and do laundry in case we were without power for a while. It was eerie and creepy.

Then at midnight the storm attacked. We live in a basement, so we don't hear or see as if we were above ground. I opened our door and looked out at the flailing trees and stood listening to the howling wind. It was a powerful moment of recognizing God's power. I've never had one of those moments (I won't lie, I closed that door and said many many many prayers for protection), not looking at scenery, not basking in the sun on the beach. It was the first time I felt the Lord in nature, right there in the midst of a very stormy night. And felt protected at the same time. I know, it doesn't make a lot of sense, but I felt safe.

And now the storm is over.

Our loved ones suffered minor damage and are safe, power is slowly being restored, debris is being cleaned, and lives are back on track.

And I'm still feeling safe.

Thrifted 8/23/11

I love the rustic simplicity of mason jars, but man can they get expensive!

This adorable jar was just hanging out in the housewares section of Savers and it was just too cute and functional (and cheap) to let stay all alone on the shelf.

I brought it home and filled it with my posy pins.

Love that they get to be on display when they're not on me.
It's like they're captured  little fire flies.

What I Made Monday 8/22/11

It's time to head on over to Conni's blog for I Made It Monday.

Photobucket

Again, Pinterest totally inspired me. I think it's well known that I love all things flowers and blossoms. Well, I figured I might as well try a flowery necklace of some sort. But the popular rosettes just wasn't something I could master, so I found this tutorial and made a couple of pom pom necklaces.
The tutorial was perfect, explaining tools and materials needed and providing step by step instructions.

I picked cotton, poly/cotton and rayon/spandex fabrics. I've worked so far with the cotton and rayon/spandex and they were easy to work with.
And the results were so much cooler than I expected!
I loved the patterned fabric. It will be fun with plain white or brown tees.
And the sea foam one is being worn today.
If you usually receive Christmas gifts from me, don't be surprised if this is in your stocking.

Thrifted 8/16/11

One commonality among the outfits I've pinned lately is a simple sweater paired with jeans and a scarf. Just simple, fresh, and weekend perfect.

I am craving the start of fall. Like really excited to pull out my sweaters and jackets and cozy up under blankets. So naturally, I hunted for some fall-phasable (ya like that new word right?) staple items.

The basics for this outfit are what I found this week:
Top: Ann Taylor, thrifted $7
Jeans: Lands End, thrifted $6
(other items: scarf: the Pleated Poppy, Belt: Eddie Bauer, Shoes: Clarks)

I had no clue until I got home that the sweater is 100% silk...I wondered why it was so soft! And the jeans are divine - a tiny bit of stretch to keep it's perfect trouser shape.

And this is why I love thrifting. I can splurge on fun (usually handmade) accessories and still have quality clothes that I paid 80% off retail. It's life-changing I tell ya!

What I Made Monday 8/8/11

I'm linking up with lots of other creative ladies for I Made it Monday at My Personal Reflections
Photobucket

This week I made a baby scrapbook for a coworker expecting her first child in the next few months.

I used some of my favorite papers from Making Memories, Die Cuts with a View, and Daisy D's that I've held onto and never really used.

The baby boom among my friends has just started (I know, it will likely last a while) so I am just now building up a baby arsenal in my scrapbook/cardmaking supplies.

Usually when I make albums (commissioned or for a gift) I add in lots of ribbons, monograms, special dates, buttons, etc. I'm not always sure of others' tastes, so I try to put in a little of everything.

Let's hope Colin's mama is happy (and that Colin is one day too).
