Words on the Walls

This will sound funny, but I am not a fan of quotes on my walls. 

Actually, what I am not a fan of is inspirational quotes that I could never live up to.

For instance "Live fully, laugh often, love deeply". I love that quote. I really do. But most days I'm living like it's a glass half-empty world, scowling intensely, and not getting along with people.  (I'm not saying my attitude is right, either. I know that it needs work. Lots of work that I can't do alone).

But there were two quotes I have always wanted on my walls -

 the scriptures read at our wedding.

When the fabulous Denise opened her new Etsy shop Kiss the Sky (please read the shop's welcome, it's probably the most beautiful one found on the entire webernets) I knew that I needed to buy

Ruth 1:16 

 and Hebrews 13:2 for our home.

I actually think that these are two things that Freddy and I try to live up to. 

We 'do life' together. It's so very important for us.

And the hospitality thing? Well, we live in a one bedroom apartment, so we can't really host overnight gatherings, but something we treasure is being with those we love and trying to make them feel special when they are with us. It's something we value, to have people be a part of the every day moments and sharing them together.

I'm not at all saying that we have this life thing figured out, but these gentle reminders from the Lord keep me going. 

They keep me focused on what is important. 

And I know in His faithfulness, I will be what He desires. 

Maybe one day I will be living fully, laughing often, and loving deeply. That can be my new prayer.

The Lost Wife

Just started it this week and although barely into it, really enjoying this book. Historical fiction is my go-to genre.  

Listening to:

A Rule Against Murder

I thought the beginning was a tiny bit slow, but this murder mystery started to pick up once there was a crime to solve.

Watching:

Breaking Bad

Holy moly. Now, I've always been terrified of all things drug related. And all things vomit related. This show is chock full of both (when I asked a friend if there was any vomit, his answer was "no, not really." I've learned that's a total lie. There is a great deal of vomit. Averaging one scene every other episode), but the acting is superb and the writing is fantastic. Thanks to Netflix we've been marathon watching seasons for the past week, causing some sleepless nights for me, however, I don't regret watching it.

Learning about:

Friendships. The past six months have left me reflecting on the value of true friends and the need for meaningful relationships. This has been a tough area for me my whole life. I know I can be a better friend, I just don't quite know how to do that. I need to be more understanding of others and be less um, snappy with people. 

Praying for:

-strength in our marriage

-absorbing joy, avoiding the negativity I tend to focus on

-health for those we love

-less stress

I've removed everything Shabby Blogs related. I hope they resolve the issues because some of their designs are just adorbs.

Recent Reads - May

Here's what I finished reading the past few months:

My Name is Mary Sutter (Audio Edition)

I had high hopes for this one, but it was eh.

I do enjoy historical fiction, especially books set during the Civil War and I loved how the author entwined known historical figures into the story of a woman becoming a surgeon. The narrator was a bit harsh though and her voice just got to me. 

Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin and the Race of a Lifetime

The HBO movie of the same name was based on this book. Although the entire 2 plus hours of the movie was about Sarah Palin, the book maybe dedicated 50 pages to the entire McCain campaign. What impressed me most about this book were the details of the Democratic party's primary. Of course, I don't know what's true and what is rumor, but it was fascinating to read about personality clashes and quirks. It wasn't a boring politically motivated book, but a look at both sides, their mistakes and their triumphs. Fascinating. Like I didn't want to put it down and looked forward to my lunch hour to read not eat.

And my favorite recent read Unbroken

Woah. Seriously woah.

I've owned this book for a year when everyone was raving about this book. Even the most cynical people in my life were obsessing about this book.

It did not disappoint.

I listened to the audio version of this one too (thanks, Patty!), and the narrator was incredible (well, how could Edward Hermann not be amazing??).  

Yes, the subject matter is brutal (not giving anything away here), but the story of survival amidst dire circumstances coupled with a crazy beautiful ending made it so worth it.

If you're looking to read one book this year, make this it.

Today I turn 29.

It's not a big number, but at the same time, it's huuuuge for me. My last birthday in my 20s. Ack.

We'll see next year if I have a better attitude about it, but I don't know how I'll react to being 30.

Instead of being all melodramatic (because people get sick of me doing that in real life, so I will spare those in blog land), I will share what my favorite gifts are this year.

My new tea brewing system IngenuiTEA from Adagio tea:

I am a tea snob and make a ginormous thermos every morning of 5 regular and 3 decaf tea bags. 

Quite frankly, it's been tasting pretty bland and blah. 

Enter the fab teas from Adagio and this nifty brewer.

Now I enjoy a perfectly brewed thermos of ceylon sonata or Irish breakfast tea. Why should I save the good stuff only for the weekend?

An Amazon gift card. Because I can load up my Kindle or buy just about anything I want.

New Lisa Leonard necklace

I had one made for my mother in law a few years ago that says live in the light.

My Illuminate necklace will say "let light shine" from 2 Corinthians 4:6

"For God who said, "Light let shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."

Probably the best gift are the planned gatherings.

We had a perfect dinner with Freddy's family last night, are looking forward to celebrating with my family tonight, and have a couple of other meals with friends over the next week. Connecting with others is my favorite gift of all - actually sharing and enjoying time together. We are so blessed to have such wonderful people in our lives - it makes life much more fun!

So it's really not about the material stuff at all (it's fun, trust me, I love a good gift), but about the real gifts that matter - a God who loves always, and people to walk this life alongside. Thanks blog friends for the trust, love, and awesomeness you share all year long. I appreciate our friendship, the emails, the comments, the thoughtful encouragement you share with me. Thank you for making this year a true blast.

Q&A 3/6/12

Erin shared some cool stuff about herself over on her blog today. Feel free to play along and answer some fun questions about you.

1. What led you to blogging? My friend Paige really encouraged me to start blogging about four years ago. I wish I blogged more back then (about wedding plans, my 366 photo project, the randomness that I seem to always leave out) because I remember things happening but would have a better memory if I blogged them.

2. What's one goal you have for your blog? To make new, encouraging friends. Not the deepest goal, but that's what blogging seems to have naturally done, so I'd like that to continue.

3. What's your favorite part of your home? I like our bedroom (when I put all my clothes away).

4. What would your closet or home (your choice) say about you? Color overload! 

5. Favorite meal or comfort food? Pasta any way. I love a great, zesty pesto sauce.

6. What item would you love to splurge on if money was no object? A luxury car. Ok that's being practical. If I was honest, I'd say an Hermes Birkin bag. I know, completely shallow, but I have been saying for the past five years that if I could afford one and not look like a moron carrying it (meaning I would need to have a very different life, I know this is never happening) then I would buy one.

7.If you had an entire day alone, with no responsibilites or obligations, how would you spend it? Probably a little thrifting mixed with reading and knitting. Maybe a movie thrown in there during knitting. Or a Mad Men marathon.

8.Favorite vacation destination? I would love to go back to London. It was magical.

9. Do you live near your hometown, or have you moved far away? I'm about an hour away from where I grew up, which compared to some who have moved great distances from home, it's not a lot. I just plug in my iPod and listen to a book during the drive to my parents'. 

10. What's your dream job, if there is such a thing? I think I'd love being a stylist. I watch shows now and like thinking about the outfits and checking out the details of the sets (not the actual structures, like decor, dishes, etc). It's almost like a treasure hunt scrutinizing the pasta pot used on Modern Family to decide if it's LeCreuset (it so is). Still trying to figure out those dishes though. Square Fiesta? I dunno.

11. Complete this thought. Ten years ago...I was in my freshman year of college. Eeek! I didn't even know my husband yet. Most of my closest friends weren't in my life then. A lot can change in ten years.

Current Reads

I have a goal of reading 30 books in 2012. It was also my goal in 2011 and I nearly reached it, but thanks to a few crazy long books, I came up short. So far I am ahead two books but that gap tends to close in the summer. 

We'll see.

My favorite book thus far is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

I listened to this because I don't think 

I would ever get through the actual novel. 

Oh my word, it was wonderful. Perfect narration, intricate story. 

Just loved it.

This book stuck with me, haunted me (in a good way), 

and will be a hard book to beat.

I haven't seen the film yet. I forget plots quickly, so I will wait a little while until I won't be picky about the missing plot points.

I also read the play Women's Minyan.

It was a quick read, but again, I felt so connected to the characters even though they are worlds away in an Orthodox Jewish community in Israel. I think this was a 1.99 Kindle download and it was definitely worth the price and then some.

After 44 hours of listening (and being freaked out, confused, and then terrified) I finally finished Stephen King's It.

My husband is a huuuuuge Stephen King fan. Has nearly every single one of his books. Loves them all.

I've always been turned off by the ginormousness of the books. Oh and the sheer terror that is supposed to accompany reading them.

But then 11/22/63 was being published and all the people who reviewed it were so thrilled about the links between It and this new book, so I caved.

It was really flipping long.

Realllllly long.

But it was satisfyingly good.

Now I am reading 11/22/63 and it is quite possibly in the top ten books I've ever read.

The story starts right up, no draggingly long back story, no set up, it just starts.

And bonus, it's not scary.

Thrifted 2/21/12

I realized I haven't posted any thifted finds in quite a while. The clothes I pick up are featured in What I Wore Wednesday posts, but the house ware items rarely get their little moment on the blog.


This weekend was epic - I found my first two pieces of genuine (read: not reproduction) jadeite.

I adore jadeite.

If I could only have jadeite in our kitchen I would. But alas, it is ridiculously rare to find them for affordable prices (at least in my neck of the woods. I'm not yet ready for eBay.)

These two darling tea cups also came home with a Fire King Restaurant ware mug in milkglass. She was only 4 bucks but if she was jadeite, she would be $40. And I probably would have passed out from joy of finding one locally. But I love her just as she is.

What I Made Monday 2/6/12

Years. Five years of wanting to make this.

After the de-decorating from Christmas I lost a piece of wall art. For most of January I wandered around the apartment wistfully saying "where's my wall art??"

Finally I caved and decided to make the heart punch collage. Just in time for Valentine's Day.

I purged a ton of my scrapbook papers and found some of my favorite Chatterbox sheets, so started punching away. Punch is the Martha Stewart heart punch.

Originally I thought I would mount the punched hearts on red cardstock, but we really don't have much red in our kitchen, so decided to go with white textured cardstock instead.

The sheet was 8x8 and I added pop dot adhesive for each heart. All the years I've used these foam dots I threw away the extra leftover adhesive scraps.  I finally realized I just had to rip it apart and use the background that is still sticky and just as good as the circles.

I bought an inexpensive matted 12x12 frame from Michael's and now the wall art is in its place.

Of course, now that it's hanging, we found the wall art.

What I Made Monday 1/23/12 and THE Giveaway!

This week I finally finished knitting the infinity scarf  I want to give away to one of my blog readers.

I knit it in a lightweight wool/acrylic blend so that it will keep you toasty but also won't be too heavy if you live some place that is enjoying warmer temps. And it can be hand washed (which isn't always easy, but it's cheaper than dry cleaning I guess).

It's a lovely cream yarn in an elegant moss stitch. 

Plus I like that it has a little texture and drapes nicely.

You can wear it long

or short and with a Pleated Poppy Posy Pin (which is of course, my favorite way to embellish a scarf.
